Feedback from Participants

This program helped me gain a better understanding of my own interests by introducing me to a range of research topics in fields other than my own, and also being able to have further hands-on experience in a lab setting.  Also, living in the dorm with other people in the program made the summer program even more enjoyable.  ER-2007

I had a great experience in the summer program.  The group sessions were really helpful, not only regarding research in aging, but also graduate school, med school, and ethics in general.  The retreat at Trout Lodge was a great way to relax, get to know everyone better, and discuss ethics of research.

I really enjoyed my time with Dr. Apte and the three other members of the lab.  The focus of my research was Age-Related Macular Degeneration and most of my time was spent doing PCR’s and experiments with mice.  Everyone in the lab was always helpful in explaining things thoroughly and making sure that I understood how everything was related in the research. ---QU-2007

This summer I studied lip-reading, processing speed, and perceptual closure in older adults and younger adults.  Currently, it is not clearly understood what traits or abilities underlie lip-reading skill.  This experiment gave a clearer understanding of the way language is processed in the absence of auditory input and provided critical information about what distinguishes individuals who are or are not able to obtain significant benefit from the addition of visual speech information, and the way this ability changes with age.  RW-2007
